Blog No. 467 “Business Trip”

Hello everyone, this is the 467th episode of my blog.

Last week, I was in a country on a long-term business trip.
This trip had been planned since the beginning of the year.
Although it’s not an English-speaking country, I thought I would have plenty of opportunities to speak English, so
I’ve been taking online English conversation lessons every day since April in preparation for this trip.
However, although I could feel that I had improved, I still have a long way to go.
I had expected this kind of result, so
I’m not discouraged and I plan to keep working on my English.

During the business trip, I visited a company that’s one of the world’s largest in the frozen and refrigerated logistics industry.
I was told that it has annual revenue of about 900 billion yen and 26,000 employees.
With operations in 31 countries, it’s truly a global corporation.
It has over 20,000 customers, as well as real estate and IT divisions.
The IT division reportedly has 250 employees, and they build all their systems in-house.
Of course, for major clients, they have systems in place that can integrate with their clients’ systems.
They are said to deliver one-third of the food consumed in Japanese households.
They also offer 3PL and 4PL services and they also make recommendations on food ingredients.
What I found particularly enlightening this time was their business model and productivity.
We definitely want to strengthen our capabilities as a 4PL provider as well.
It seemed they had built their own IT systems and established their own pricing structure.
With 900 billion yen in revenue sales and 26,000 employees, I thought their revenue per employee was remarkably high.

They own 75% of their fleet and operate 90% of their warehouses.
When I looked up Yamato Transport online, I found that they have 1.8 trillion yen in revenue and 160,000 employees.
Minami Nippon, on the other hand, has 30 billion yen in revenue and 2,700 employees.
Compared to Minami Nippon, they have 10 times as many employees but 30 times the revenue, which clearly illustrates the difference in productivity.
This may be more a difference in Japanese culture than a difference between companies.

In this area, the logistics industry is subject to regulations, and it seems the company operates successfully by meeting those requirements.

Regulations in Japan are also becoming stricter in many areas, so perhaps we’re heading in that direction to some extent.
I realized we need to manage our business carefully from every angle to remain competitive and sustainable.

It was a very valuable business trip.

That was my week.
See you next week.
Sincerely yours
