Blog Post No. 472: “Closing”
Hello, everyone. This is Blog Post No. 472.
I was in Singapore last week.
Have any of you heard of a dish called “prata”?
It seems to be a popular dish in Singapore, and an expat living there took me to try it last time.
The restaurant is open 24 hours a day and is said to be one of the best places to eat prata in Singapore.
This time, I decided to go on my own.
Since I was under the impression that I had paid for it myself last time, I figured I would be fine as long as I brought my credit card.
But when I finished eating my prata and went to pay, neither of the two credit cards I had with me was accepted.
It seemed that I could only pay with cash or Singapore’s own QR code payment system, something like PayPay in Japan.
Even after going back and forth with the staff several times, I still couldn’t find a solution. Just as I was about to call the expat to ask for help with the payment, a staff member told me, “It’s okay. The person who was waiting to enter the restaurant has already paid for you.”
I had no idea what had happened.
However, I immediately went over to thank him.
He told me it was no problem and returned to his seat.
I never expected to have an experience like that.
Anyway, last week in Singapore, I attended the closing to acquire the remaining shares in a Singaporean company.
I acquired the initial shares exactly three years ago.
Time sure flies.
There were many ups and downs along the way, but we finally reached this day.
The paperwork was completed matter-of-factly at the law firm, and I signed the agreement.
That evening, we held a dinner to express our gratitude to the two founders for the past three years.
At their request, it was a casual gathering.
Actually, the venue was the same one we had used when I first acquired the shares.
It was quite a moving moment.
Toward the end, the company members presented them with flowers and a plaque featuring a caricature, and I gave them a Satsuma Kiriko vase.
As you all know, Satsuma Kiriko is a traditional craft from Kagoshima.
I’ve noticed that people from Southeast Asia tend to like sparkling gemstones, such as amethysts.
So, even though it was made of glass, I thought they would appreciate it.
When I showed it to them, I was struck by how delighted the couple looked.
The two founders offered words of encouragement to everyone at the end, and it was a truly wonderful gathering.
I hope to continue having dinner with the two former owners on a regular basis.
I also hope to improve my English skills, even just a little, so that I can have more conversations with them.
That was my week.
See you next week.
Sincerely yours,
